Heat pump cost, permits and rebates by city

Short answer: A whole-home air-source heat pump costs about $17,000–$23,000 installed for a 1,500–2,500 sq ft home (national median $19,500, Rewiring America), and the federal 25C credit ended for systems placed in service after Dec. 31, 2025; state HEEHRA/HOMES status is verified officially for 4 of our 50 cities (NC, IN, GA).

How much does a heat pump cost?

Whole-home air-source heat pump, 1,500–2,500 sq ft home: $17,000–$23,000 (median $19,500). Single-zone mini-split: $5,400–$8,500 (median $6,600). Ranges are 20th–80th percentile modeled national project costs (equipment plus installation).

Is the 25C heat pump tax credit still available?

No. The federal Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (section 25C, which covered heat pumps) is not allowed for any property placed in service after December 31, 2025.

Where can I check HEEHRA/HOMES rebates?

DOE says the rebates “are now available in select states” and tells households to contact their State or Territory Energy Office; its page currently has no state-by-state status map. We list a state's status only where we read it on the official state program page.
