WA DOL counts: our query of the dataset on Oct 25, 2026 (dataset last updated Oct 14, 2026). DOL counts vehicles currently registered with it, so they differ from AFDC's method; don't compare them directly.
Gaps
We haven't added city counts for the other 25 states and DC. California's DMV/CEC and New York, Texas and Colorado publish data in other formats that we haven't checked yet.
Which state has the most EVs?
California, with about 1,533,900 battery-electric vehicles registered through 2024 (AFDC).
Does this include plug-in hybrids?
They're shown in a separate column. Plug-in hybrids also use home chargers, usually at lower power.
How current is this?
AFDC's latest year is 2024. Washington's DOL dataset is updated more often; we queried it on Oct 25, 2026.
